BLANK ELEMENT
Editing Which Articles Appear in Which Section

As mentioned in the Publishing and Article section, you can get an article to show up in two ways:

Each method of getting an article to appear relies on the correct Filtering Settings listed below:

1. Use the "Publish Here" link on a block of content. This will transfer the settings of categorization and filtering to the content you are writing.

2. Write an article from your profile and assign the appropriate Categorization or Section settings to make it appear on the appropriate block on any page

Filtering Methods:

Universal selections in all filtering methods:

Number of articles to show - don't leave this blank, it must have at least 1 article displayed

Show Image Incons - this will display a thumbnail image (these will be default thumbnails unless thumbnails were placed into the article thumbnail under the Advanced Options)

Show Summaries - this will display the summary of your content (not selecting this will show just the title, date and author of the article)

Show Full Text - this will display the entire article in the block

Show Title - this will allow a title to be displayed as a link to the rest of the article.  This MUST BE TURNED ON unless you are displaying the Full Text of an article and you don't want the title to show up.  If it isn't turned on, then there is nothing to click on to view the rest of the article.

Show Author & Date - these will allow the author and date of publishing (respectively) to appear in the article list.

Show Rating - this will show the article rating stars in the display you are looking at.  These article rating stars will appear within the full display of the article reguardless.

Show Tags - this will show the tags that were given to the article by the author (tags are a series of keywords that refer to the article they are added to)

Show Comments -  this will show the article comments in the display you are looking at.  These comments will appear within the full display of the article reguardless.

Show Pagination - this allows your visitors to have access to more articles within a particular section by clicking the Next button.  This is only necessary if you set the number of articles you want to display to a low number but you have more articles behind it that appear in the same section.

Allow Users to Publish Here - this setting allows other visitors to write articles that will appear in that section.  This is good for getting people to contribute to a particular section on a site.  Do not turn this on if you doin't want people contributing.

Filter by Category/Subcategory - when articles are written they can be placed into a particular Category (Music, Games, Fashion, System Help, High School, College, etc.), then they are placed in a Subcategory (related to the Category they are in).  This is the most basic way to filter content, though it is less precise.

Filter Types

User: This allows you to choose a particular user to pull content from within a block

  • Select display options
  • Select User Name from the list
  • Optional Category/Subcategory filter - this will select articles from the chosen user that they have placed in a particular Category and/or Subcategory

Group: This allows you to choose articles from a group of authors or a website on the iHigh Network

  • Same process as the User

Subcategory: Basic way to filter articles from ALL users that have categorized content into Categories and Subcategories

  • Choose display options
  • Select a Category and Subcategory (note: this content will come from all users)

Section: Specific way to select content that was posted for a particular section on a specific site.

  • Choose display options
  • Select Channel the content comes from (i.e. iHighSchools, Games, Music)
  • Select Site that the content is assigned to (this will be a very specific part of the system, such as a channel, a school site, an artist site, etc.)
  • Section within this site that content is assigned to (i.e. the most specific element of conten on a page, such as the About Us section on a high school page)
  • Optional Category/Subcategory - this further filters the sections, though it is typically not needed

Pick: Select articles from all articles on the system individually

  • Choose display options
  • Select from the master list of articles

That's it...
